EVOLUTION OF A GUEST ROOM

When we moved in to this house, even though it was on our wish list, we got our first dedicated guest room. I took one look at it and thought, easy, buy a bed, add some shelves to the room, make sure there’s room in the closet for guests, done! So that’s what I started to do. The last time you saw the guest room, I had bought an affordable mattress, box spring, and bed frame.

After that, I figured out how much space was left to add something like bookshelves in the room—one of my biggest wishes when I am in a guest room is a place to set things down. I came across this modern secretary from Target and immediately latched on to the idea of the guest room becoming a multi-functional space that I could use for sewing as well, because the desk has a space big enough to hide the sewing machine in when not in use.

It wasn’t in stock, so I waited and waited and finally was able to purchase it! And decided that the matching bookshelf would look good next to it. Once it arrived, Matt and I (and Zenko!) tag teamed assembling it and putting it in the space.

And so it sat for a while as we had some of our usual friends stay a night or two as they were driving through the area. It wasn’t until Thanksgiving when we had some longer term guests in the room that I came to the realization that it wasn’t working out. I mean, the layout was great as a place for me to use the sewing machine, but the dominant usage of the room is to be a guest space, and that didn’t seem to be working as I had hoped. The furniture was taking up too much of the room.

The day that everyone left after Thanksgiving, Matt and I pulled the desk and the shelves out of the room. But now what? I sat down and created a mood board for the room. Something that felt more spacious, but still had places to set things down. I have a Pinterest Board that you can check out, but I also find it helpful to lay everything out in one image to see if it all fits together.

The stools can do double duty as seats or as luggage racks since they will be easily moveable. The console might look better in white… And in addition to the above, I’m hoping to add some new bedding, a plant or two, and new paint to the walls and ceiling. Stay tuned! Love, Shauna
